The client
Branch built the portal and the console behind it as one product. A custom enterprise CMS gives each department its own route to publish, so a venue page, an attraction listing and an event schedule are updated by the teams that own them. The public side is a single responsive portal covering the master plan, the attractions and their bookings, the venues and the ticketing, and it is built to take on the next initiative rather than be rebuilt for it.
Expo City Dubai is what the Expo 2020 site became after the world fair closed: a district with residents, businesses, attractions and a year-round events programme, rather than a six-month exhibition.
The challenge
A site the world already knew by one name had to start trading under another, and the four audiences it now serves, residents, businesses, event partners and visitors, had no single place to go. The portal had to hold all of them without splitting into four sites, carry content that changes daily against an events calendar that changes hourly, and let several departments publish into it at once without waiting on each other or on a developer.
What we built
Custom enterprise CMS
Built for the way the city actually publishes: multi-department access, rapid content updates, and both on-demand and live content handled from one console rather than a queue through a single team.
The public portal
One responsive site carrying the city master plan, the attractions, venue details and the events programme, structured so a new district initiative is a new section rather than a new website.
Ticketing and bookings
An event ticket marketplace covering paid and free admission alongside attraction bookings, so a visitor plans and buys in the same place they came to read.
Cross-platform delivery
One interface built for mobile and desktop together, which is the only sensible shape for a destination site where most of its readers arrive on a phone, on site, with a question about the next hour.
Results
A single digital gateway for visitors, businesses and event partners, in place for the transition out of Expo 2020.
Real-time content across the city’s global visitor touchpoints, published by the departments that own it.
Web infrastructure sized for Expo City Dubai’s long-term destination marketing and smart city programme, not for one launch.
